Retainers
Retainers hold your teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment. Consistent wear and proper care prevent relapse.
Mild pressure or tightness for the first few days
Temporary increase in saliva or slight lisp when speaking
Slight tenderness when first inserting after a break
Wear the retainer exactly as instructed (usually full-time for the first months, then nightly)
Remove before eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, or sports
Clean daily with a soft toothbrush and cool water — avoid hot water (it warps the plastic)
Soak in retainer cleaner or diluted mouthwash 1–2 times per week
Always store in its case when not worn — never wrap in a napkin
The retainer cracks, breaks, or no longer fits properly
You notice your teeth starting to shift
Persistent gum irritation or bad odor that cleaning does not resolve
Keep the case with you to avoid throwing the retainer away by mistake
Bring your retainer to every follow-up visit so we can check the fit
Replacement is recommended every few years for fixed retainers and as needed for removable ones
